Ned Kelly Reviews March 2003

may contain spoilers

From Natalie B:
Originally, I knew nothing about Ned Kelly! All I knew was that he was wanted by the police and that he was hanged. Why? I had no idea! I felt guilty for being an Australian and not knowing the first thing about Ned Kelly when Orlando, who's not even Australian, felt so passionate about Ned Kelly's story that he agreed to be a part of the movie!! So I thought I'd go see it. At that stage, I didn't care about the movie, I just wanted to perve on Orli. Boy, did I change my mind once I saw the movie! (I HAD to go on opening night - 27th March lol) I thought the movie wasn't going to be too good as it had not-so-great reviews (not that I read them!) and that I'd just be going for Orli. Well, as it turned out, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I felt really bad for the way the Kelly gang was treated unjustly. I think Orlando did an excellent job, looking as good as ever.. mmm... bath tub!! He never ceases to amaze me! I said to my sister and my friend, trust Orlando to play the male... well I won't say what I said because it's a bit harsh but it was funny and great to see (apart from the raging jealously I was feeling! hahaha). Overall I think the gang members have done a great job, Heath Ledger in particular does a superb job, and the last scenes are absolutely touching and you won't walk away from the movie without taking something with you, whether that be respect for Ned Kelly and his gang's bravery... or 10,000 buckets of drool for Orlando... but you will be touched on some kind of level.

From Natalie:
Just saw Ned Kelly - all I have to say is Joe Byrne - Womaniser Extraordinaire! There weren't many women in this film Orlando's alter ego didn't err..sleep with - he looks like a fabulous kisser as well, but why not?  He does everything else so well!  Best Orlando scene was with the bank manager's wife who they have just taken hostage (Rachel Griffiths) and she is telling him about all the scandals she has read about him, one in particular relating to a young lady, to which he replies "We were just good friends".  She makes a disparaging comment and he sits down next to her and begins to flirt outrageously and says "there's nothing wrong with being friendly, is there?"  Rachel's response is the extremely apt - "You are an absolute beast!"... before climbing onto his lap, that is.  Who wouldn't?  Oh, and as well as speaking Elvish beautifully, it would appear that Mr Bloom is at least fairly competent in a few words of Mandarin, at least competent enough to ask a pretty Chinese servant to wash his back for him in the bath as he can't reach... Any takers?

From Amy:
I saw Ned Kelly last night (Thursday, 27th March) and thought I'd give a quick review for you to post up for people....
Like it has already been said, sadly yes... it did lack a little depth. But, my reasoning for that is that the director (Gregor Jordan) has tried his best to keep it as close to the historical accounts from the police, witnesses and Ned Kelly himself, at his trial, and his family members, and since few people really know the truth of what happened in certain events such as the Glenrowan hotel shoot-out and the Stringybark murders, it's hard to make a depiction of it. There's pieces missing, which gives it that shallow feel, but, it also gives the viewer a chance to make his/her own deductions of what may have happened. But it is the best Kelly film I've ever seen, and I've seen three or four!
As for the acting, all I can say is: brilliant. Every single one of them. Orlando has officially got my respect as an actor, and I can now safely say he's brilliant. Heath Ledger is mesmerising as Ned, it's hard not to look at him. His mannerisms and facial expressions are mind-blowing. The other gang members (can't remember actors!) who are Steve Hart and Dan Kelly, also steal their scenes, one scene in particular will make you sob out loud (I did, and afterwards got asked by the oldies next me "are you alright, dear?"). Kerry Conlan (Kate Kelly) is also amazing.
Everyone involved shines, but it's those five that stand out. I won't give anything away, but I will warn people that some scenes are quite gruesome, and if you have a weak stomache like I do, I recommend you wear a big jumper you can hind your face in (I'm not kidding). And I also suggest seeing it during the day, so you have time to do something afterwards, as it's one of the most depressing films I've seen, and will leave you feeling quite down and dejected. All in all, it's a must see at the cinema, and everyone should enjoy it!
Hope everyone is now busting to see it!
Oops! I forgot to add that Orli fans will find him quite able to deliver a few laughs without it becoming lame. One scene which breaks the tension of the film will have you in stitches, not because it's so funny as such, but it is so out of place, but fits so well, that it's hilarious! Won't say more, enough from me now!
