Pirates of the Caribbean Premiere Report June 28, 2003
by Sarah (The OB Files)
Here are my pass and invitation.
First of all, let me apologize for any fan girl moments in this report, and for it having a little too much detail than people might actually care about! If you want to read just the Orlando parts, scroll down to the red text.
I found out I was going to the premiere a day before, thanks to MEL who was able to get me a pass! I was able to book a flight that arrived in LA at 5pm on Saturday. We got to Disneyland at around 6:30pm and picked up our passes. I saw a bunch of people just inside the gates, and my first thought was, "All these people were invited to the premiere?" It wasn't until we got inside the park, and were directed to the beginning of the red carpet, that I realized that all the people I saw were there to watch the red carpet
arrivals! It was a bit strange walking down the red carpet with all the fans watching. It was even stranger when we walked by all the photographers and video cameras. Since we got there pretty early, the only stars I saw were Virginia Madsen, who was being photographed, and Danny Bonaduce who was being interviewed by E! TV. I now have a little more of an understanding, and sympathy, for what the stars go through. Photographers screaming at you, lights being shown in your face, and everyone staring at you. I wasn't even there when the main stars arrived, I can only imagine what that must have been like.
There were also pirate performers on the red carpet, as well as inside the movie area. When we got off the red carpet, we went to go eat right away. They had different locations set up with buffets. While we were eating I saw Oded Fehr (The Mummy), Corbin Bersen and Eric Idle. There were no
paparazzi inside the premiere area, so everyone was just enjoying themselves, most with their families.
All the tables were decorated with a center piece that had: coins, gems, nuggets, pearls, gold earrings, eye patches, little treasure boxes, and a skull coin bank on top of a velvety cloth (pic). We started to take some of the little stuff, then asked someone if we could take the larger stuff. They asked their manager and said 'Yes', so we took everything on the table, and a little more off some other tables! Hey, it was the 'Pirates' premiere, we were just getting into the spirit. We should have came back after the movie to take it, but we weren't sure if it would still be there. It was a bit of a pain carrying it around with us everywhere. We decided to get into the spirit even more, and took the cloths from the center pieces and wrapped them around our heads, and used an eye patch to hold it in place. The cloth was long and heavy, so it kept sliding up my forehead the whole night, instead of staying down by my eyebrows! We then put on the gold clip-on earrings, and some pearls, and got up and walked around a bit. Other people were dressed up as well, and we got a few compliments from people through out the night. We were just standing around this open area, and saw a few more stars arrive: Cuba Gooding Jr., David Hasselhoff, John and Rebecca Stamos, John Voight, and David Moscow, who had an eye patch over each eye, and was being led around by 3 women. That was pretty amusing to watch.
We then went back by the end of the red carpet, because all the stars have to come in that way, and we would be sure to catch everyone. There were a few other people waiting there too, probably with the same idea that we had. By now it was dark out, and we could see all the lights on the red carpet, but couldn't actually see anyone. We heard loud screams every once in a while, and guessed they must be for Orlando or Johnny. Finally Keira Knightley came off the red carpet. I didn't
recognize her at first, and she walked right by all of us. But then some people ran up to her, and she stopped to sign some autographs. I asked her for one, and her assistant or someone said mine would be the last one, and then made her continue on. I don't know what the big hurry was since Orlando and Johnny were still on the red carpet. Here's her autograph.
About 15 minutes later, around 9pm, Orlando finally appeared! He was stopped, talking to someone he knew, and I heard him say "That has got to be the longest red carpet ever!" in a sort of exhausted voice, but smiling nonetheless. I was about 20 feet away from him, and was a bit in shock at actually seeing him, so I was just standing there. Then he started walking, and walked by us pretty fast. I frantically dug out my pen and paper, and my camera, and grabbed my pirate loot and jacket, and went after him! I tried to take a few pics from behind, because he was walking really fast, being led by his assistant, and I wasn't sure if I'd actually get to see him again.
A few people asked him for his autograph while he was walking, so I went up to him and asked him for one. He said "Sure", and stopped and signed my little pad of paper. I said "Thank youuuuu" and was looking down at the paper and pen he was giving back to me, when he said "You're welcome" in this really sweet voice. I looked up and he was looking right at me and had the biggest smile on his face. This was really the first time I had gotten a good look at him up close, and I was bit taken a back. Photos do not do him justice, he is beautiful in person! I just smiled back at him, and he continued walking, leaving me standing there
a bit shell shocked!
I quickly got over my initial shock, and we continued walking. The Tom Sawyer raft dock was just a little up the walk way, and Orlando had stopped there, along with a bunch of other people.
Disney Studio's Chairman Dick Cook was waiting there, and Orlando gave him a big hug, and seemed really happy to see him. I wasn't standing too close to them, because I didn't want to intrude, but I did take a few pics, as Orlando was finally standing still!
When they were done talking, Orlando started walking to the raft dock, so I went up to him and said "Orlando, can we get our photo taken with you?" He said sure. His assistant was trying to get him to come with her, but he told her to 'hold on a second'. Then he put his arm around us, and I put mine around his waist. That's when I
realized how good he smelled! I had always heard that, and it's completely true! His cologne was musky, but also sweet smelling. So we got our pic taken, said thanks, and he went off to the raft dock. I think I was in shock, once again, at actually being that close to him. People might say, he's just a guy, but he's also the most wonderful guy you could imagine! Maybe one day I will look back at all this and laugh at myself for carrying on so much about an actor named Orlando Bloom. But for now, I'm perfectly content to do so. :)
The photo of us is a bit blurry because the camera was focusing on a light in the background!
By then, there were people walking around telling us to take our seats for the movie. We had to turn in our cameras, then were given soda and popcorn, and sat down. The screen was on Tom Sawyer's Island, across the river. They had dancers on a 'pirate' ship (The Columbia) entertaining the waiting crowd. Then they moved the ship off, dimmed the lights, and started the introductions! They brought the cast and crew out on a Tom Sawyer raft, and introduced Jack Davenport, Keira Knightley, and then Orlando. Orlando got a lot of cheers, including the most high pitched cheers out of anyone! After Orlando, Johnny was introduced, and he received the loudest applause. Then Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski were introduced. Then the raft was taken to another dock, and they all got off and walked to their seats. That was the last time I saw
Orlando, in person that is.
Then the movie began. We had planned to cheer really loudly when Orlando's name appeared on screen, but there were no opening credits! I think they may not have been done working on them. Johnny and Orlando got a few cheers when they appeared on screen for the first time. The movie was excellent, the crowd seemed to really enjoy it. When the movie ended, the credits were very short and only listed the main players. We screamed like crazy when Orlando's name came
up. Then
they put the Pirates logo up on the screen, let off some fire works, turned the lights back on, and everyone poured off the bleachers. The cast were sitting pretty far away, so I couldn't see where they were or what they were doing.
After the movie, they still had a few rides open. We went on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and walked through the gallery above the ride. Then we went to the Haunted Mansion. There weren't that many people walking around the park, I think a lot of them had gone home. While we were waiting at the beginning of the Haunted Mansion ride, I looked over and
recognized Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex on Smallville. I had heard that he would be there, and was glad that I actually did get to see him, as he is one of my favorite actors. He was with two friends, so I went up to his side and said "Hey Michael?". He kinda jumped, went 'Huh?!', turned around, said a few swears and said I scared him! :) I
apologized and asked if I could get an autograph. He said Yes, then asked me my name. While he was signing, he mentioned again how I had scared him. I should have made a joke about us being in the Haunted Mansion, but I didn't. Instead I made some stupid remark about how I almost didn't
recognize him with hair. (Lex is bald) This is why I should not be allowed to talk to celebrities. I finally get the chance to talk to someone I admire, and I say something stupid. I guess it was a good thing I was too intimidated to talk to Orlando, who knows what would have came out! Here's Michael's autograph.
After the ride, it was 1am, and the park was closing. On the way out, everyone was given a POTC hat and Xbox game. I saw Michael again, waiting for his limo. We did not arrive in a limo, ahem, so we had to walk back down
Main Street. They had the red carpet all rolled up, and the barricades down, so the limos could get through. What a difference it was seeing the park after all the hoopla that took place only a few hours before. We walked back to our hotel with smiles on our faces, and our arms full with pirate treasure. The entire night was a wonderful experience, one that I will never
forget!
